When is Taco Bell Mexican Pizza returning?
Following a three-month absence, Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza is coming back to menus as a permanent item on September 15th. The news was first revealed by Taco Bell CEO Mark King in an interview with Fortune published on July 29th.
“It’s going to be relaunched mid-September and it’s going to be a permanent item,” King said of the fan-favorite dish, before adding that he “had more feedback — hate mail! — over the removal of Mexican Pizza [than any other time].”
The FAQ webpage for Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza was also updated to reflect the return date of the beloved menu item. It was pointed out on the webpage that the late summer return of the Mexican Pizza is sooner than Taco Bell first anticipated when shortages hit earlier this year, as the chain worked quickly to restock the item.
“Taco Bell worked diligently to resolve depleted ingredients and supply chain challenges that originally caused longer gaps in the product’s availability,” read a portion of the Mexican Pizza’s FAQ webpage.
The official Taco Bell Twitter account also confirmed the item’s much-awaited return, tweeting that “The beans have been spilled.”
Taco Bell Mexican Pizza ingredients
According to Taco Bell, the Mexican Pizza will come back to the chain’s menu in all its previous glory, “complete with the same ingredients” of seasoned beef and refried beans between two fried flour tortillas, topped with pizza sauce, and the restaurant’s signature three-cheese blend and fresh diced tomatoes.
About Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza
Originally called Pizzazz Pizza, Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza was first introduced in 1985 and had since become a longtime staple on the chain’s menu. It, however, was one of the several menu items that were discontinued in 2020 as the restaurant looked to streamline its offerings during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fast-forward to May 2022, Taco Bell brought the Mexican Pizza with intentions for it to be on menus for good, only to sell out in a matter of weeks. When the item came back after its two-year hiatus, demand for the item was seven times higher than the last time it was on the Taco Bell menu. According to King, Taco Bell’s 7,600 stores were out of the Mexican Pizza in less than two months.
Though some people claimed that the brief comeback of Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza earlier this year was a stunt, the chain maintained that it’s not the case. “While [limited-time offerings] are core to Taco Bell’s ability to churn out menu innovation, that wasn’t the plan for the Mexican Pizza,” said the restaurant. “Upon its menu return, demand for the Mexican Pizza was 7x higher than when previously available. While demand and ingredient shortages delayed that permanency, it’ll be here to stay for good when it returns September 15th.”
How much is Taco Bell Mexican Pizza?
When Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza returned to the menu last May, an ala carte order of the item was selling for $4.49. Meanwhile, a combo with a Mexican Pizza, two Crunchy Tacos, and a Large Fountain Drink was retailing for $8.99. There’s no word yet whether these prices will remain the same when the item returns to menus this September.
