Surveying its database of more than 740,000 insured pets, Trupanion came up with the following ranking:

As seen in the list above, Luna is the most popular dog name in 2022, moving up a spot from 2021. Last year’s most popular dog name, Bella, is now in the third spot, while 2021’s third placer, Charlie, is now the second most popular pup moniker.

An Italian and Spanish given name of Latin origin, Luna means moon. In Roman mythology, Luna was the divine personification of the moon. Earth’s only natural satellite is also called Luna.

The name Luna has risen in popularity in recent years partly because of the Harry Potter character Luna Lovegood, which was played by Evanna Lynch and Kalinda Gray in the movies.

The breed’s dense, hard coat comes in yellow, black, and luscious chocolate.

In celebration of National Dog Day, lawncare services marketplace LawnStarter also unveiled the best cities for dog lovers in the United States.

To find out the most dog-friendly cities in the country, LawnStarter compared 174 U.S. cities using 24 different metrics. Grouped into six categories (Housing, Community, Care, Services, Businesses, and Affordability), these key indicators include share of dog-friendly rental properties, number of dog events, pet stores per square mile, dog sitters per 100,000 residents, dog-friendly restaurants per square mile, and average dog insurance premium, among many others.

After LawnStarter calculated the weighted scores for each city in each category and averaged the scores for each city across all categories, below are the places that emerged as the best American cities for dog lovers.

  5. Austin, Texas

Orlando is 2022’s most dog-friendly city in the U.S. Based on the results of LawnStarter’s study, Orlando has a high number of pet caretakers, boarding options, and pet stores. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the city is frequented by tourists with their four-legged furry pets in tow. Ironically, these tourists come to Orlando to meet Disney’s most popular dogs, Goofy and Pluto, only to drop off their own canine friends with pet sitters.
